Getting started with Botox: what to actually expect at your first appointment

If you've been thinking about Botox for a while but keep putting it off because you're not totally sure what happens at the appointment, this is the honest walkthrough I'd give my own friends.

Most people I see at their first Botox appointment have been thinking about it for at least a year. Sometimes longer. They've watched their forehead lines deepen, scrolled through Instagram comparisons, asked friends, read reviews — and finally, they've booked. By the time they sit down across from me, they're a mix of excited and a little nervous.

The nervousness is almost always about not knowing what happens next. So let's walk through it.

The consultation comes first

Every first appointment at Vivid starts with a real consultation, not a sales pitch. We sit down, you tell me what's bothering you and what your goals are, and I look at your face — at rest and in motion — to understand which areas I'd actually recommend treating.

Sometimes that means treating exactly what you came in for. Sometimes it means a different area entirely. And occasionally it means waiting, or skipping a treatment because it's not the right fit. If a treatment isn't right for you, I'll tell you.

What the injections actually feel like

The injections themselves are quick — usually 5 to 10 minutes for the actual injection portion of the appointment. The needles are very fine, and most clients describe the sensation as a small pinch or pressure, gone in a second.

I'm known for a gentle technique, and most people are genuinely surprised by how comfortable the appointment is. We can use ice or topical numbing if you'd prefer, but the majority of clients don't end up needing it.

What happens after

You can return to your day right after. There are a few simple aftercare guidelines — no lying flat, no exercise, and no facials for 24 hours — but otherwise, you can go right back to work, errands, or your evening plans.

You won't see results immediately. Botox starts working at around day 3 or 4, and the full effect is visible at 7 to 14 days. I'll see you back at the two-week mark for a complimentary follow-up to make sure we got the result you were hoping for.

How long it lasts

Three to four months for most clients. With consistent maintenance, the muscles being treated weaken slightly over time, and the time between treatments often gets longer.
